South Africa's wine industry is gearing up for tourism, and now is the perfect time for wine lovers to explore this rapidly developing wine country. Elgin is one of the coolest wine regions in South Africa and is therefore an ideal destination for growing wine, which is already widely recognised in the region. If you visit one of the best wine growing areas and the best wineries, you will find what you expect from a visit.
The cool temperatures and abundant winter rainfall mean that the Elgin Basin offers a range of conditions for viticulture that are very different from those in the surrounding areas. The varieties that best suit the cooler climate, such as Sauvignon, are grown in the east - on a slope, while the more robust reds, such as Merlot, require warm afternoons in the west - on a slope, in order to mature fully. There is a wide variety of varieties for lower altitudes, such as Chardonnay and Cabernet Francs, as well as for lower altitudes varieties such as Pinot Gris.Â
